Another month, another batch of new arrivals coming to two of streaming’s biggest names: Disney+ and Hulu. For Disney bundle subscribers, there are some major TV shows premiering and returning in September 2024, including a new dark adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the second season of an action thriller starring a veteran actor, the renewal of a unique relationship drama, and plenty of classic films. So, without further ado, let’s get into the September 2024 additions to the ever-intertwined Disney+ and Hulu.
By far, the biggest release of September 2024 is the Disney+ original series Agatha All Along. From the mind of WandaVision creator Jac Shaffer, Agatha All Along is a pseudo-sequel/spin-off series that follows villain Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) as she’s broken out of the spell Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) put her in thanks to an unfamiliar teen (Joe Locke). In order to regain her magic power, the fan-favorite Marvel villain must start a new coven of her own.
Like most MCU Disney+ shows, specific details about Agatha All Along are being kept under wraps other than the involvement of a superb cast ensemble featuring the likes of Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza. Time will tell if this MCU series becomes a cultural juggernaut like WandaVision and Loki, or ends up forgettable like Secret Invasion and She-Hulk. But when the eight-episode series premieres its first two episodes on September 18, 2024, many Disney+ subscribers and Marvel fans will undoubteldy be tuning in to the streamer to find out.
For Hulu subscribers, Tell Me Lies Season 2 is a top streaming recommendation for September 2024. Based on the novel of the same name by Carola Lovering, the ambitious Hulu original series follows the 8-year-long relationship of college freshman Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and college junior Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White). The first season holds a respectable 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, with plenty of room to grow. It’ll be interesting for audiences to see how the central couple of the Hulu show changes throughout the years when the first two episodes of the second season premiere on September 4, 2024, followed by regular weekly releases.
One of Hulu’s biggest benefits is the ability to stream FX shows. On that note, The Old Man Season 2 premieres on September 12, 2024. The FX series is based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name. Starring Jeff Bridges as former CIA operative Dan Chase, The Old Man received near-universal acclaim in its first season. The second season continues the cat-and-mouse chase between Dan Chase and the FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper (John Lithgow), which promises to be just as tense and chock-full of veteran actors doing great work as season one.
The ever-popular creator Ryan Murphy of Glee and American Horror Story fame has two new FX shows coming to the Hulu streaming platform in September 2024 as well. The first is Grotesquerie, another dive into the horror sandbox for Murphy. The mysterious Hulu original series stars the likes of Niecy Nash, Courtney B. Vance, Leslie Manville, and none other than Kansas City Chiefs football star Travis Kelce. That alone should be enough to get anyone to watch when it debuts on September 25, 2024. The other show Murphy has cooked up is American Sports Story, a new sports-centered anthology series that follows in the steps of the popular American Crime Story. This first season is all about the true crimes of disgraced New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez (Josh Andrés Rivera), with Patrick Schwarzenegger co-starring as former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.
Hulu subscribers can also enjoy the beloved animated sitcoms The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers as they premiere their 36th and 15th seasons, respectively, on September 30th, 2024. Regardless of discussions of either animated show perhaps having gone on for longer than necessary, it’s clear that there are still plenty of hungry fans ready for more. The lesser-known Krapopolis will debut its second season on the same date as well. Fans of Rick & Morty and Community creator Dan Harmon will surely get a kick out of the next chapter in his Ancient Greece-set cartoon.
In terms of familiar favorites that are coming to these streaming services, there’s quite a bit to discuss. First up are a few recent film festival favorites. Boy Kills World, Babes, Handling the Undead, and Asphalt City are all being sprinkled onto Hulu throughout the month. Furthermore, Hulu has franchise fever, with the first four Die Hard movies and both The Princess Diaries films being added to the streaming giant at the top of September 2024. Those who recently enjoyed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in theaters can also now stream the first film in the reboot series, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, on Hulu. Another underrated new addition is the whodunit comedy See How They Run, starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan.
Finally, one can never go wrong by giving a rewatch to more modern hits like Judd Apatow’s Superbad, J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, and Jordan Peele’s Us.
