This is one rule that I have come across that I most definitely want to follow all the time!

The ‘Rule of Five’ is about making a commitment to takefive daily actions that leadtowardsyour goals. This rule has been attributed to Cranfield and Hansen, authors of The New York Timesbestseller Chicken Soup for the Soul. They created andpracticed the Rule of Five based on advice from teacher, Ron Scolastico who shared the analogy of a lumberjack cutting down a tree:

If yougo every day to a very large tree and take five swings at it with a very sharp axe, eventually, no matter how large the tree, it would have to come down.

The authors applied the analogy by taking five daily actions to promote the sale of their book:

We would do five interviews, contact five reviewers, send out five books to celebrities who might be able to help us, make five calls to sell the book to network marketing sales organisations – five measurable actions every single day, no matter what. – Chicken Soup for the Soul, Unlocking the Secrets to Living Your Dreams.

Success did not happen overnight, but through consistency and commitment in taking daily actions thateventually led them to beingwildly successful.

What will you commit to doing consistently each day to drive you towards achieving your goals? What five swings of the axe can you commit to taking daily?

Think of five daily actions you can take to help you achieve your desired goals, and consider committing to taking these actions.

The following are some examples:

  • Career promotion and development (apply for jobs, read a blog or book on professional development, make a new connection/network online or in-person, update/review your resume and online profiles, excel at a work-related task or deliverable)
  • Grow your business (email or contact X no. of leads, ask for a referral or follow-up on an existing client, request or share a testimonial on social media, send or follow-up on aproposal, create/develop/refine your products or service)
  • Lose weight (exercise every day, commit to a daily maximum number of calories, record your food, drink 2 litres of water, read an article/blog on weight loss)

Consistency drives result! It is one of the biggest drivers towards success. If wecan commit to taking positiveactions daily that are linked to our goals, this will no doubt help us reach our goals!

5 Why's of problem solving. Asking why? 5 times is an important part of Toyota's problem solving & continuous improvement methodology. --- 5 P’s of leadership. There are 3P’s that should guide your personal activities & performance; Purpose, Passion & persistence. Organisational performance requires two additional P’s; Practised by all your People --- ‘Purpose, Passion, Persistence – Practised by all your People. Job done! The leader’s job is to define the Purpose, create the Passion, support the Persistence & ensure all their People are engaged in the Practise. ---5 Up’s of success. 4 times down, 5 times up. Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do.” - Confucius. ---5 Areas of calculation for success in war. Sun Tzu in his classic work ‘The Art of War’ (Circa 500 BC) defined 5 areas of calculation to give success in war. 1) Morale cause. 2) Nature. 3) Situation. 4) Leadership. 5) Discipline. ---5 Never’s of determination. “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” - Winston Churchill. What power this rule of 5 has.
