Duties

The Conservator (Book) is responsible for the conservation treatment of bound and unbound SLA special and general collections materials.

In This Position, You Will

• Perform conservation treatments of bound and unbound SLA collections characterized by historical significance, rarity, value, and the occasional presence of complex technical problems, including book and paper conservation, historical book structures, binding techniques, and materials science.
• Work collaboratively with the SLA Preservation Team to assist in the design and implement preservation management strategies for the effective and efficient care of SLA holdings.
• Act as a trusted and reliable resource for SLA and SI staff, external researchers, and the public.

QualificationsGS-09 Experience:You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position Specialized experience is defined as performing a variety of conservation techniques for library or archives materials, using a variety of materials for binding (i.e., paper, cloth, leather) and conservation treatments (i.e., aqueous, and non-aqueous treatments), and construction of enclosures for the physical protection of library materials.

OREducation: master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related
